TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
My curriculum underscores the importance of praxis in learning art. In my studio
courses I apply a three-pronged approach: hands-on technique, followed by formal and
conceptual analysis.
Art production is becoming increasingly computer-aided. In addition to providing
fundamental shop techniques, my lectures add digital tools to a student's skill-set.
New media are not presented as preferable to conventional modes. Rather, every approach
to object making is revealed to have its own set of connotations (which can then be
folded back into a work).
In contrast to my focus on emerging technology, the critical portion of my pedagogy is
traditional in its origins. Formal analysis is brought back to the fore and expanded
to include movement, sound, interactivity, etc. Students begin analysis of every work
with a thorough description of its physical characteristics.
With the formal qualities of a work established, students can analyze the concepts
embedded within. Critique is taught as a skill, requiring a carefully measured approach
where conceptual features are shown to spring directly from physical characteristics.
Students must demonstrate the ability to apply these skills to their own work as well
as that of their peers.
